GREEN  BROOK  SCHOOL DISTRICT
ALUMNI  AND  FACULTY  EMAIL  DIRECTORY

ANSWERS  TO  F.A.Q.

by  Lex  Renda

What is this site and for what purpose is it intended?
This site is primarily a non-commercial directory of Green Brook School
District alumni and faculty email addresses.  Created on January 8, 2001,
its purpose is to facilitate class reunions and friendly communication
between members of the Green Brook School District community.

How does this web site differ from commercial ones?
It is free.  Commercial sites have the advantage of reaching people through
advertising, and most will allow you to register on their sites for free.  But
they charge you to send email or to have a web link (they hide people's
email addresses, disingenously claiming that they care about protecting
your privacy, when their real goal is for you to pay, as much as $30 per year,
to use their services).  I try to contact everyone who signs up on such sites
and inform them about our site.  This is time-consuming, however, and so
I ask everyone to help in spreading word of this site to their Green Brook
friends.

Who is eligible to be a member of the directory?
Anyone who ever attended or taught at either Irene E. Feldkirchner School
(also known as Green Brook School or Andrew Street School), or Green Brook
High School (also known as Green Brook Middle School) is eligible to join
this directory, as are people who were residents of Green Brook (in their K
through 12 years) when attending schools in other towns.  Although this
site bears the title of an "alumni" directory, you don't have to be
an alumnus or alumna to be listed in it.  Current students are also eligible
to join the directory.

OK, the site is free.  But it must cost something to maintain.
Can I make a donation?
The labor that goes into maintaining this site can be considered one
of my hobbies.  As to web costs:  In order to avoid irritating banner
and pop-up ads, as well as to have access to a liberal amount
of bandwidth and web space, I pay about $100 per year.
If you want to send me a donation, of any amount--no matter
how small--I will gratefully accept it.  You can send your check
to Lex Renda, 4915 W. Hiawatha Drive, Mequon, WI, 53092.

Do I have to be a member of the directory to send email messages?
No.  To be sure, the more people whose addresses are in the directory the
greater its utility; but access is not limited to directory members.

Where are people's email addresses located?
On the site's home page--just scroll down a bit on the screen.

How do I add my email address onto the site?  How do I change
my email address on the site?
Click the  "Add me to List" button.  You will be taken to a page with a
very brief form to fill out.  After you are done, click the "Thank you"
button and your completed form will be sent to me.  I'll
then add your email address to the directory.  I'm in contact
with my email almost everyday so you can rest assured that your
address will be uploaded with due speed.

I was told that I have been entered on the site, and yet I still do
not see my name on it; how come?
You are probably viewing a copy of the site created on your
screen before I uploaded your name and address.  Click
your computer's "reload" or "refresh" button (you can also
find this option by right-clicking your mouse) and you'll
retrieve the latest copy of the site.

How can I remember the site's web address?
If you bookmark the main page, you won't have to
remember the address.  If you are using AOL or some
other dial-up service provider, I suggest that you not
only bookmark it on that provider's template but on the
internet explorer or netscape templates as well.  That
way, your browser will record the address even if you
change internet providers.  If you are getting a new
computer, I suggest that you copy your bookmarks
file from your old computer onto a disk and upload
onto the new one.  Should you fail to bookmark the
address, go to a search engine web site, such as
yahoo.com or google.com, and type:
"Lex Renda" AND "Green Brook".  The site's link
will appear on the search results page.

Is there a way to identify recent additions,
and changes made, to the directory?
Yes.  Click the "New Members" button and you will be
taken to a page indicating the additions and
email address changes of the past two weeks.

How do I locate a specific person in the directory?
If your browser is internet explorer, go toward the upper
left hand corner of your screen, click on the "edit" tab,
and then click on "find (on this page)"  (If you are
using netscape's browser, click on "find on page").  Write
in the name of the person and then click the "find next"
button.

What should I do if I sent someone a message
and I got a return message stating that the
email address is no longer valid?
Let me know about it.  I will try to obtain a valid
email address for that person.

What is the bio page and how do I add an entry?
This is a member profile page.  Click the "Bio Page"
button and follow directions.   You will be able to
provide biographical information about yourself, as well as
whatever other contact information that you wish.
Click the "thank you" button on the bottom of the
submission form and your entry will be sent, automatically,
to me.  I will then post your entry.  Please note:
You must fill in the email address box for the bio to be
submitted successfully. Submitting a bio form makes it
unnecessary to submit a form to be added to the email directory,
as people who submit bio forms will have their names and
email addresses listed in the directory as well.

I'm not sure what I should put in my bio.  After all, I
have not climbed Mt. Everest, won a million dollars, or
parented ten children.  What should I do?
The choice of entering a bio is entirely up to you.  I will
say that I think most people are mainly interested in the
simple "whatever happen to" questions about you:
Where abouts do you live?; are you married?; do
you have kids; what are you doing with yourself
these days?; and so forth.

How can biography photos be placed onto this site?
Send them, as email attachments, to me.
You can also send me photos via snail mail and I will scan
them onto my computer.  Send them to:  Lex Renda,
4915 W. Hiawatha Drive, Mequon, WI, 53092.

Can I get a link to my personal or business web site placed
in the directory?
Yes.  Click the "Alumni Pages" button and you will be taken to
a page with alumni personal and commercial web site links.  Just
complete and submit the web link form and I'll post your link on
the page.  Submitting a web link form makes it unnecessary to submit
a form to be added to the email directory, as people who submit web
link forms will have their names and email addresses listed in the
directory as well.

How can this site be used to facilitate a class reunion?
If you are organizing a class reunion, you can activate
a class page.  Such a page can include the names of
classmates with unknown addresses and details on
the reunion itself.  Just let me know and I'll enter the
information for you.

What is the site's policy regarding the publication of
reunion photos?
As in the case of biography photos, you can send me reunion
photos either as email attachments, to me, or via
snail mail and I will scan them onto my computer.  If your photos
exceed 1 megabyte, please send them to me on a CD, as my
hotmail account has limited storage.  Send the CD to:
Lex Renda, 4915 W. Hiawatha Drive, Mequon, WI, 53092.
I will post on the site (tasteful) reunion photos, without identifications,
to a maximum of 50 photos per reunion.

How do I view the reunion photos?
The reunion photos are presented in the form of slideshows, which
are accessible from the class pages.  Once on a slideshow, you can
either advance or retreat manually one slide at a time, go to the thumbnail
display and select an image, or click the "play" button for the slides to
advance, every 10 seconds, automatically.  You can also select other
reunion photo slideshows to view, without having to return to the
class pages index.  At times the slideshows can have minds of their own.
If an image doesn't appear, try clicking the reload or refresh button.

What is the purpose of the "Reunion Central" page?
This page is intended for people who want to submit information
in order to be contacted in the event of a reunion but might not
want to have such information included on the web site's bio page.
You do not have to have your email address listed in the directory
in order to submit reunion contact information.

Sometimes I have trouble accessing the directory; how come?
On very rare occasions the server for the main page will be down for
maintenance or an upgrade.  If you have trouble connecting to the
site, please be patient and just try again later.  Thanks.

Why, when I click on someone's name, do I get a message
saying that I have not set up my email server?
If you are gettting this message (or something similar to it) it
means that you are examining the site with a browser (such
as netscape or internet explorer) for which you have not established
an email system.  For example, if you normally use microsoft's
outlook express to send email, and you are viewing the site with
netscape, when you click on a person's name you will be attempting
to send your message with netscape messenger instead of
outlook express and you will get an error message.  In that case,
you should use internet explorer or your internet provider (e.g., AOL) 's
browser to view the site and send messages from it.  If, on the other
hand, you normally use netscape messenger to send email and are viewing
the site with internet explorer, you will get an error message when
attempting to send a message with one of microsoft's email servers.
In that case, view the site with either netscape or your internet
provider's browser.

You mention, in the terms of use and disclaimer memo,
that the email addresses in this directory are not hidden.
How concerned should I be about this?
The degree to which you need to worry may vary depending on your situation
and disposition.  I have never been all that particular about to whom I give my
email address because I tend to treat email addresses as just. . .well, as email
addresses.  If you want to join the directory but are reluctant to use your
primary email address, I suggest that you use a secondary one instead.
Internet providers such as AOL typically allow you to have multiple screen
names, which function as different email addresses.  In addition, web search
engines such as yahoo.com and msn's hotmail.com allow you to have free
email addresses.

You have not answered all of my questions.
Then email them to me
